MARPOL Convention
International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships

Description

This international agreement provides a framework for the elimination of intentional pollution of the marine environment by oil and other harmful substances and the minimization of accidental discharge of such substances.

Note: The 1973 Agreement did not enter into force until the provisions of the 1978 Protocol were adopted, and the agreement and its 1978 Protocol are normally referred to jointly as “MARPOL 73/78.” As the 1973 MARPOL Convention had not yet entered into force in 1878, the 1978 MARPOL Protocol absorbed the parent Convention.
