Basel Convention

Description

This international convention creates a framework for controlling the movement of hazardous wastes across international borders. A central goal of the Basel Convention is "to protect human health and the environment against the adverse effects resulting from the generation, management, transboundary movements and disposal of hazardous and other wastes.”

The Basel Convention is accompanied by a series of bilateral, multilateral and regional agreements.
