MARPOL Protocol
Protocol of 1978 Relating to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships

Description

This Protocol made possible the entry into force of the 1973 International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships ("MARPOL Convention"). As the 1973 Convention had not yet entered into force, the 1978 MARPOL Protocol absorbed the parent convention. Thus, the two instruments are used together, and are referred to as MARPOL 73/78. MARPOL 73/78 is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.
