Socio-economic Status of People Living Near Protected Areas in the Central Albertine Rift

Socio-economic Status of People Living Near Protected Areas in the Central Albertine Rift

Description

This report summarises the results of a baseline survey of people living within 10 km of six protected areas in the central Albertine Rift region of Africa. This region has some of the highest densities of people on the continent, as well as high biodiversity and conservation values. As a result, there are major challenges to the conservation of protected areas in the region, many of which have become islands of natural habitat in a sea of agriculture.

The aim of this report is to provide a baseline from which future monitoring can take place. The results are summarised in three sections: a socio-economic status of local communities in the Central Albertine Rift; an assessment of the economic situation and income generation; and, finally, the relationship between the local community and protected areas.
