Buhoma Community Development Association

Buhoma Community Development Association

Description

Buhoma Community Developement Association (BCDA) is a community based business enterprise initiated and managed by the local coommunity around Bwindi Inpenetrable National Park (BINP), which is found in south western Uganda, about 600 kilometers from the Ugandan capital Kampala. It is located right at the entrance of Bwindi Inpenetrable National Park which is believed to be home to about half the world's population of the endangered mountain gorillas as well as many endemic birds.

One of the main reason that led to the creation of BCDA was to position the local communities around the National Park to earn a living through methods that would not destroy the biodiversity in their living environment. The backbone of the Ugandan Buhoma Community Development Association is the Buhoma Community Rest Camp (BCRC), a tourist camp owned by the community. All the benefits of the rest camp are used for the community. Examples of projects (partly) paid with revenues from the camp are the water gravity scheme, a community car and schools. A great advantage of BCRC is that it provides jobs for the community. There is, however, some competition with other tourist camps in Buhoma.
