Description
Environmental security threats are becoming increasingly prominent within the Canadian security agenda. Two recent assessments of Canadian security priorities, Securing an Open Society: Canada's National Security Priority (April 2004) and Canada's International Policy Statement: A Role of Pride and Influence in the World (April 2005), emphasize the inseparability of environmental and security realms. Both suggest that a more thorough understanding of the overlap between these areas is crucial to ensuring Canada's long-term security.
This conference will bring together scholars, policy experts and activists to discuss the importance of environmental security in both the Canadian and global contexts. Our aim is to foster deeper engagement between the security and environmental communities, whose expertise are too often isolated from each other. This workshop will seek to foster dialogue and understanding among key analysts and actors in order to better position Canada to confront emerging threats to its environmental security.
